Singer Lemar was among the winners

The winners were announced during a ceremony at the Shepherd's Bush Empire, in London, on Tuesday night.

Young was crowned artist of the year, while Lemar won the award for Best Urban Artist.

The awards, presented by Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills, honour the best use of interactivity in online radio, artist websites, downloads and mobile devices.

Formally known as the Interactive Music Awards, the event is in its third year.

Other winners included Faithless, who took best dance act, Girls Aloud, who were named best pop artist, and Paul Weller won best rock/indie act.

Apple's iTunes was named best download service, while Virgin Radio took the award for best online radio station.

The awards honoured winners in 17 categories. Thirteen of those were voted for by the public and four were judged by a panel of experts.

Andrew Brown, chief executive of BT Rich Media who organise the awards, said: "This year's awards have been designed to significantly increase participation from consumers.

"Music fans have just begun to seriously embrace digital music entertainment and we aim to celebrate the positive role the platform plays for the industry."
