The Impressionist's painting of the Houses of Parliament is to be sold at Christie's in New York on 3 November.

The work, titled Londres, le Parlement, effet de soleil dans le brouillard, will be displayed at Christie's, in London, on Wednesday.

It is expected to fetch up to �10m at the Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale.

Private collectors

Monet painted the piece at the turn of the 20th Century while staying in London.

He created only 19 oils of the Houses of Parliament, and 11 of those were shown in Monet's 1904 exhibition of views of the Thames in Paris.

Almost all of the paintings were bought at the exhibition by collectors of the day.

The painting to be sold at Christie's is considered one of the most important of the 19.

Only five of the set remain in private hands while the others are in museums across the world, including Moscow's Pushkin Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.

It is the third Parliament painting to be offered at auction by Christie's.
