Love 'not guilty' of drug charges

Singer Courtney Love has pleaded not guilty to two counts of drug possession at a Beverly Hills court.

The charges relate to prescription painkillers, Oxycodone and Hydrocodone, found by police in Ms Love's Los Angeles home last October.

Earlier this month Judge Elden Fox ruled that there was "reasonable" cause to bind the singer over for trial.

But Ms Love's lawyer claimed she was in "legal possession" of the drugs. A pre-trial hearing was set for 4 June.

'Bogus charges'

Addressing reporters outside the court on Friday, lawyer Michael Rosenstein claimed the charges against the former Hole star were bogus.

"I don't see this going to trial. These are not banned substances. They were prescription (drugs) that she was in legal possession of.

"I have confidence in the evidence and in my client. I would imagine today will be her last day in court," Mr Rosenstein said.

The drugs were discovered by police, following an incident that saw Ms Love arrested for breaking windows at her ex-boyfriend's L.A home in October 2003.

Ms Love, 39, faces separate charges of disorderly conduct and being under the influence of drugs, stemming from that incident.

Police testimony

Last month, police officer Douglas Trerise, testified that he was called to Ms Love's bedroom, where she "gave [him] a plastic bag with pills from the foot of the bed".

Ms Love was taken to a hospital and treated for a suspected overdose after police discovered the drugs.

The singer also faces assault charges in New York stemming from an altercation in a nightclub in March.

She recently lost custody of her daughter Frances Bean, 11 - daughter of her late husband Kurt Cobain - and told the US magazine Blender that she was broke.

Ms Love is currently promoting her first solo album, America's Sweethearts.
