 Shakespeare's plays, sonnets, poems and other works will be performed |
The complete literary works of Shakespeare are to be performed in a single season for the first time. As well as his well-known plays, the Complete Works of Shakespeare Festival will feature his entire collection of sonnets, poems and other works.
The seven-month festival will begin in April 2006, with performances at Royal Shakespeare Company theatres and other venues in Stratford-upon-Avon.
Visiting theatre companies from across the globe will also take part.
Black comedy
Next year, the RSC will mark the 400th anniversary of the Gunpowder Plot in its Swan Theatre, with a season of little-known Jacobean and Elizabethan political drama.
Plays will include A New Way to Please You (or The Old Law), a black comedy written in 1618 dealing with euthanasia.
Thomas More, thought to be part-written by Shakespeare, will look at London's response to the arrival of asylum seekers fleeing religious persecution.
The 2005 season will also include Speaking Like Magpies by Frank McGuinness, inspired by the Gunpowder Plot anniversary.
