The last time a complete set came up for auction in 1994, it was sold for �3,800, while last March a single copy of Live And Let Die went for �3,910.

Meanwhile, a a first edition copy of Winnie The Pooh, including its original dust jacker, was sold for �1,380.

A 1936 copy of Ulysses by James Joyce, one of only 100 copies signed by the author, fetched �9,775 although it was expected to sell at up to �4,000.

A book dealer bought the 1894 Arthur Conan Doyle classic, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, for �25,200 - as opposed to an expected �7,000.

A signed first edition of The Hobbit was sold for �13,800 - when it was expected to go for �3,000.

Vaughan 'to stay as Big Breakfast host'

Johnny Vaughan is to continue hosting The Big Breakfast, after signing a �3.5m-a-year contract with Channel 4, according to reports.

Vaughan will also front a new movie show and a pop programme, The Express newspaper says.

The newspaper adds that Kelly Brook, Vaughan's much-maligned 19-year-old co-host, is also to stay on the show.

Company magazine recently voted Vaughan fifth sexiest man in the world.

Comic Lenny 'treated for depression'

Comedian Lenny Henry is being treated for depression at the exclusive Priory Clinic in London, it has been reported.

According to The Mirror, the star has had an emotional collapse after recent tabloid allegations put strain on his 15-year marriage to Dawn French.

A friend of the star is quoted as saying: "Lenny knows he has a battle on to save his marriage."

The 40-year-old Henry had to cancel several shows in his recent UK tour.

Talk Radio try to tempt cricket-mad Jagger

Veteran rocker Mick Jagger is reported to be considering a deal with Talk Radio to become the station's cricket expert, according to the Sun newspaper.

Talk Radio, who won the rights to broadcast England's South Africa tour this winter, hope to sign the singer within weeks.

Jagger is known for his love of the sport and was at Lords in London to watch Australia beat Zimbabwe this week.

Two years ago he launched a cricket website to keep up with the games whilst on tour.

Foyle's bookshop owner dies

Christina Foyle, legendary proprieter of London bookshop Foyles, has died aged 88.

Mrs Foyle was best-known as the hostess of Foyle's Literary Luncheons, where book lovers paid to lunch with authors such as Bertrand Russell, George Bernard Shaw and Haile Selassie.

Mrs Foyle took over the bookshop from her father William and uncle Gilbert, who opened it in London's Charing Cross Road in 1907.

With 30 miles of ramshackle shelves and a manual filing system, the shop has long been an anachronism in the modern book world, but Ms Foyle saw off all attempts to buy her out.

Clooney sings to help hometown cinema

Jazz singer Rosemary Clooney is organising an annual music festival to raise money for the renovation of a cinema in Kentucky.

The Russell Theater in Maysville premiered Clooney's first movie The Stars Are Singing back in 1953 and now needs $3.5m for restoration work.

The five-time Grammy nominee, the aunt of actor George, will headline the outdoor show on 25 September in Maysville, the town where she was born.

Hot shots Reese and Ryan tie the knot

Young Hollywood stars Ryan Philippe and Reese Witherspoon have tied the knot at a ceremony in South Carolina.

Witherspoon, 23, whose roles in films like Pleasantville and Twilight have made her hot Hollywood property, is pregnant with her first child.

She stars opposite Philippe, 24, in Cruel Intentions, a remake of Dangerous Liaisons in which she plays an innocent girl cruelly seduced.

Cruel Intentions is out in the UK on 18 June.

Griffith signs up for demented movie

Melanie Griffith has signed up to star in the new film from cult director John Waters - a satire of Hollywood called Cecil B Demented.

She will play a glamorous film star who is kidnapped and forced at gunpoint to star in a movie being made by a band of "cinema terrorists", who commit acts of terrorism against bad films.
