BBC Proms climaxes on high note
Young Musician of the Year, Nicola Benedetti

Thousands of people enjoyed the finale of the annual BBC Proms concerts with events nationwide coinciding with the Albert Hall concert on Saturday night.

Concerts held in London, Manchester, Swansea and Belfast were broadcast on BBC television and radio.

But severe weather led to the cancellation of the outdoor BBC's Proms in the Park in Scotland.

The concert at Glasgow's Pacific Quay had to be called off because of fears that high winds would be a safety risk.

Audience safety

Nicola Benedetti, Young Musician of the Year, tenor Jamie MacDougall and the BBC's Scottish Symphony Orchestra were to be part of Glasgow's line-up.

The five cities were due to have their own Proms In The Parks concerts before linking up on big screens for a live broadcast of the finale in London.

The main part of the live concert on BBC Four came from Swansea instead.

A BBC Scotland spokeswoman said: "Due to adverse weather conditions and a worsening forecast it is with regret that the BBC Proms in the Park event at Pacific Quay in Glasgow has been cancelled for the safety of audience and performers."

A spokeswoman for Glasgow City Council said its officials had agreed it would not be in the interests of public safety to continue with the event.

In Hyde Park, Irish pop group The Corrs and percussionist Evelyn Glennie performed, with Terry Wogan as host.

It is the 110th season of the world-renowned eight-week festival.

It began on 17 July in the Royal Albert Hall - where it also finished.

  • The Scottish Proms in the Park is not the first open-air public event to fall victim to the weather in the past year.

Strong winds caused the cancellation of Hogmanay celebrations in Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
