The film, starring Bill Murray, won four awards

Sofia Coppola's Oscar-winning film won the audience, screenplay and first-time director prizes. Actor Bill Murray was also honoured for his performance.

Christopher Guest won the director gong for his mock-documentary A Mighty Wind. Diane Keaton received this year's American Film Institute Star Award.

British comedian Dave Gorman won the best one-person show award.

A panel featuring the Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker, producer Michael Patrick King and the show's seven female writers received a standing ovation from the audience.

Mr King told The Hollywood Reporter magazine that a decision over filming a Sex and the City movie would be made shortly.

Barrymore comedy

The cast and creators of fellow HBO comedy hit Curb Your Enthusiasm also revealed how the show was made. The programme uses only a seven or eight page script, with the rest of the show improvised.

Napoleon Dynamite, a comedy by new director Jared Hess, won best feature in the festival's Film Discovery Program.

My Date With Drew, a comedy starring Corey Feldman about a man who is obsessed with actress Drew Barrymore, won the audience award.
