Sir Trevor McDonald will stay at ITV News beyond 2005, the broadcaster has said, after reports that he would leave the 10.30pm ITV1 bulletin next year. ITV News is negotiating a new contract with him - but the company would not comment on whether he would stay at the helm of the flagship bulletin.
The reports have said he would leave the bulletin and just host his Tonight current affairs show after 2005.
Sir Trevor, 64, is one of the UK's most respected newsreaders.
He has presented the channel's main evening news since 1990.

"Trevor McDonald is currently in negotiations with ITN and ITV over his next ITV News contract," an ITV News statement said. "Discussions are going well and are at an advanced stage but are not yet completed.
"The length of the contract is part of the negotiations but it is not true that Trevor will be leaving within a year. His contract will run beyond 2005."
The Mirror had reported he would retire at the age of 65 and quoted him saying "I love what I do very much but I can't go on forever".
The presenter has hosted current affairs show Tonight with Trevor McDonald since 1999.
