Gervais was surprised by his Golden Globes success

A spokeswoman for The Office star said Simpsons creator Matt Groening had asked Gervais if he wanted to do a voice for the show.

"Ricky said he would love to so it might happen, but he won't be doing it as David Brent," said the spokeswoman.

She said Golden Globe winner Gervais thought the cult cartoon show was the best thing on TV.

Prime Minister Tony Blair and author JK Rowling recently appeared in The Simpsons and Pop Idol judge Simon Cowell will be seen in an episode to be shown in the UK in May.

Gervais, who created spoof Slough-based documentary The Office with Steven Merchant, made history in January as the first British actor to win a TV comedy acting award at the US Golden Globe Awards.

The Office was also the first UK sitcom to win the best comedy prize.

Gervais has been working on new material since he returned from the US last month.

"It will be another observational comedy about a man who says exactly what he's thinking," said the comic.

"I am going to start work on a new series with Steve Merchant and start writing as soon as I can," he added.

The Office came to a close at Christmas with two special episodes about how the characters had progressed.

A US version of the show based on the comedy is to be produced, but is unlikely to bear much resemblance to its British predecessor.

Gervais has said the Christmas episodes were the last outing for David Brent and his co-workers.
