The Return of the King is the first fantasy film to win best picture |
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won all 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for in Hollywood on Sunday - an unparalleled achievement. The Lord of the Rings' achievement is a first in the 76 years of the Oscars - other films have won as many awards, but none has scored a clean sweep in so many categories.
Only two other best picture winners have won every award they were nominated for - Gigi in 1958 and The Last Emperor in 1988. They both won nine Oscars.
