The film industry is to look at other ways of preventing piracy |
Film studios will be allowed to decide for themselves whether to send preview DVDs to award judges, say reports. Last year the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) banned its members from sending out so-called "screeners" in an anti-piracy move.
But the ban was halted after a group of independent producers won a lawsuit, arguing it could damage award chances.
ScreenDaily.com reported that the MPAA had now decided to leave preview tape policy up to individual distributors.
The decision means all film distributors will once more be free to send out preview copies to all awards voters, unless they themselves have a strong anti-screener policy.
MPAA president Jack Valenti will hold a meeting on 12 April with representatives from awards bodies, guilds, press and critics groups to discuss how to prevent piracy of the preview tapes.
