Haddon's book is nominated in five categories

Beckham's autobiography, My Side, is also joined by Paul Burrell's memoirs and Monica Ali's Brick Lane in the Book of the Year category.

Madonna's English Roses is nominated for Children's Book of the Year along with Philip Pullman's Lyra's Oxford.

The awards will be announced live on Channel 4 on 7 April.

Haddon, author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, is nominated in a record five categories.

As well as Book of the Year, he is up for Author of the Year, the Literary Fiction Award, the Children's Book of the Year and the Audiobook of the Year.

Monica Ali's debut Brick Lane is nominated in four categories.

A bestselling book about English grammar, Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss, also made the Book of the Year shortlist, along with Alice Sebold's The Lovely Bones and Alexander McCall Smith's The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

McCall Smith and Pullman also made the best author shortlist, alongside children's author Jacqueline Wilson, thriller writer Harlan Coben and Booker prize winner DBC Pierre.

Biography of the Year candidates include Claire Tomalin's Samuel Pepys and Shane Richie's Rags to Richie.

A new category is the Richard and Judy Best Read of the Year, featuring 10 books which have been discussed as part of the book club on Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan's daytime show.
