Aiken has carved out a successful career since American Idol

Visitors to the museum in Raleigh, North Carolina, will be able to see Aiken's white shirt, pinstripe trousers and shoes from 2 March.

"Today's popular culture often becomes tomorrow's history," museum director Elizabeth F Buford said.

Aiken is currently touring with first American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson.

The 25-year-old wore the outfit last year on American Idol when he sang the Four Tops' hit I Can't Help Myself.

The clothes will become part of the museum's permanent collection.

Rising star

Aiken's 2003 debut single This Is the Night/Bridge Over Troubled Water received the Billboard Music Award for best-selling single of 2003 in the US.

American Idol winner Ruben Studdard released his remake of Westlife's Flying Without Wings on the same day but Aiken beat him to the top of the charts.

Aiken's double A-side single went on to sell about 100,000 more copies than Studdard's song.

The Raleigh-born singer's first album, Measure of a Man, also entered on the Billboard 200 chart at number one and went double platinum.
