R Kelly banned from Jackson visit

R Kelly has protested his innocence over the charges
A Chicago judge has banned R&B star R Kelly from meeting Michael Jackson at next month's Grammy Awards.

Kelly, who is awaiting trial on 21 child pornography charges, is up for two awards at the Los Angeles event.

But Jackson, who is facing child molestation charges, is not known to be planning to attend the ceremony.

Kelly's lawyer Edward Genson said: "What's the difference if someone makes an order not to see someone he didn't want to see in the first place?"

Hearing

Judge Vincent Gaughan made the ruling during a hearing about Kelly's travel arrangements.

Kelly, who denies all charges and remains free on bail, had to obtain permission from the judge to travel to the ceremony in Los Angeles on 8 February.

The singer was told that he must be back in Chicago by 18 February.

Prosecutors and Kelly's lawyers said they did not raise the issue of a meeting with Jackson and Kelly - and the judge acted on his own in announcing the edict.

Kelly, who has previously produced two songs for Jackson, is nominated for best contemporary R&B album and best male R&B performance at this year's awards.

Jackson, who has pleaded innocent to all charges against him, has not been nominated for any awards.
