Radiohead's nominations include best UK band and best album

The Darkness and The White Stripes both get four nominations, while The Libertines and Kings Of Leon compete in three categories each.

Justin Timberlake will challenge for best solo artist against Pink and Har Mar Superstar. Winners will be announced in London on 12 February.

The NME said a record 25,000-plus votes had been cast by readers this year.

Radiohead are also nominated for best single, live band and video, while The Darkness are mentioned for best British band, single, live band and video.

The Darkness are up for four awards

The White Stripes compete in the best international band, album, single and video categories.

Competing for best UK band against Radiohead, The Darkness and The Libertines are Coldplay and Muse.

Up against The White Stripes and Kings Of Leon for best international band are The Strokes, Queens Of The Stone Age and Foo Fighters.

Best album is a choice between Radiohead's Hail To The Thief, The White Stripes' Elephant, Kings Of Leon's Youth & Young Manhood, Absolution by Muse and Room On Fire by The Strokes.

Best new band will be fought out between Kings Of Leon, Jet, Funeral for A Friend, The Thrills and Franz Ferdinand.

Taking on Timberlake, Pink and Har Mar Superstar in the solo category are Ryan Adams and Damien Rice.

Last year's major prizes at the NME awards were shared by Coldplay and Oasis with two each.
