Later bulletin ends News at Ten

Sir Trevor McDonald presents the evening bulletin
ITV1's News at Ten is to end next month, replaced by a later 10.30pm bulletin after slumping ratings.

The new version of the commercial channel's evening bulletin will start on 2 February.

The evening bulletin had been moved around ITV1 schedules recently, leading some critics to dub it "News at When?"

"This solution enhances choice for news audiences and restores a fixed slot for ITV's main evening bulletin," said director of programmes Nigel Pickard.

ITV bosses hope the fixed-time slot will help it attract more viewers, especially as the ITV1 service clashes with BBC One's own evening bulletin.

"This decision is absolutely in the public interest. Head-to-head news on the two main channels has not served viewers well," Mr Pickard said.

The news is presented by long-standing newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald.
