Michelle: "Proud to be able to do this for Scotland"

The Glaswegian becomes the first Scottish female singer to make her chart debut at the top spot.

Her single sold four times as many copies as former chart topper Mad World - by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules - which drops to two this week.

Other top 10 entrants include Kelis, Boogie Pimps and Sean Paul.

Michelle, 23, said getting to the top of the charts "meant the world" to her.

OutKast are currently at number one and two in the US

"It feels absolutely amazing. As for entering the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles all I can say is that I'm so proud to be able to do this for Scotland."

David Roberts, Editor of the record book, added: "It's interesting to see the bubble of Pop Idol still hasn't burst and the winners are still assured of a number one slot with huge sales."

And Liz Cameron, Lord Provost of Glasgow, said the singer "shows it is not just skinny people who are popstars".

The highest climber into the top 10 was American rap outfit OutKast who rose five places to reach number nine with Hey Ya!

OutKast's video was made by British producer William Green, 33, whose work is behind videos for the top three singles in the US Billboard chart.

Reggae classic

It is thought to be the first time one person has achieved this - he produced the videos for number one song for OutKast's quirky Hey Ya!, as well as the band's The Way You Move, which is at number two.

And Kelis is at number three in the US with Milkshake.

Victoria Beckham's single This Groove/Let Your Head Go slid down the chart from number three to number seven, despite an appearance on Friday's Top of the Pops on BBC One.

And Boogie Pimps went straight in at number five with Somebody to Love, while Dancehall star Sean Paul is at number six with the reggae classic I'm Still In Love With You.

Last year's Pop Idol winner Will Young dropped four places with Leave Right Now - a former number one - to number 10.

But his album Friday's Child is still at number two in the album charts, behind Dido's Life for Rent.

Michael Jackson's Number Ones album was knocked off the number three spot by Black Eyed Peas' Elephunk.
