The Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter helped sales of DVDs increase by 75% in 2003 compared with the previous year. An average of 380,000 DVDs were sold every day in the last 12 months - making a total of 140 million.
Demand for DVD videos was more than double that for VHS videos, with VHS sales down 19% to 60 million.
The British Video Association (BVA) said the second Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter movies were the year's two top-selling videos across DVD and VHS.

Pirates of the Caribbean was third in the year's video chart, selling 2.4 million copies. The first Lord of the Rings was also in the top five, while Lilo and Stitch, Die Another Day and Bruce Almighty made the top 10.
Peter Kay's Live at the Bolton Albert Hall DVD was at nine - the only top 10 DVD that was not a Hollywood film.
Meanwhile, the British Video Association has enlisted Calendar Girls actress Helen Mirren for an anti-piracy campaign.
"Theft of this kind is denying the legitimate film business the income to reinvest in great British films," she said.
"If we cannot stop the pirates, then we may not have a British film industry."
Spending on DVDs overtook VHS spending around the world for the first time in 2002, according to research publication Screen Digest. Global DVD sales were worth $22.7bn compared with $19.6bn for VHS videos.
