Nicole Kidman, who was named best actress at the 2003 Oscars, is the first star to be lined up to present an award at this year's ceremony.

Kidman, who won the Academy Award last year for her role in The Hours, will appear at the show on 29 February.

She could also pick up an award of her own on the same night after giving an acclaimed performance in Cold Mountain.

Kidman, 36, has already been nominated for a Golden Globe award for best dramatic actress for the role.

Her only Oscar nomination before The Hours was for Moulin Rouge in 2002 - but she lost out to Halle Berry.

Other big-name presenters for this year's ceremony will be announced in the coming weeks.

The Hollywood ceremony is expected to return to glittering normality this year after being overshadowed by war in Iraq in 2003.
