Siblings Jim, Sharon, Caroline and Andrea Corr were named the world's biggest-selling Irish act, while Des'ree was the top-selling British artist, according to figures from the International Federation of Phonographic Industries. The continued success of Des'ree's single Life has pushed her to worldwide fame, and earned her a Brit Award for best British female act.
Rapper-turned-actor Will Smith was named the world's best-selling R'n'B act, while Janet Jackson received a special award for her contribution to the genre. Cher won an award for lifelong contribution to the record industry. Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin was the world's best-selling Latin artist, while Lauryn Hill and Canadian act Barenaked Ladies were among the other winners. The awards are hosted by Prince Albert of Monaco, and this year they were presented by Pamela Anderson.
