Lynam was looking for a change of direction, his agent said

Lynam plans to quit sports broadcasting to work on other TV projects after the 2004 Euro football championships in July, Jane Morgan said.

Lynam, 60, left the BBC four years ago to join ITV when it won the rights to screen Premiership highlights.

The BBC said there were "absolutely no plans" for him to return to BBC Sport.

However, he will be in the audience for the Sports Personality of the Year show which takes place on BBC One on 14 December.

It will see Lynam back alongside host Gary Lineker, who took over from him as the face of the BBC's football coverage after Lynam's move to ITV in 1999.

Last year Lynam became embroiled in a war of words with BBC director general Greg Dyke, saying he did not admire Dyke after Dyke reportedly said Lynam had lost his sparkle.

But Ms Morgan said there was no animosity between Lynam and the BBC, and he would be welcomed back to Television Centre.

She said Lynam was seeking a change of direction after his decision not to renew his ITV contract.

"He feels it is a good time to go, and he has three projects on the drawing board, one of which is sports-related, but not sport per se.

"If the BBC were interested in looking at this we would be delighted."

Lynam, long known as a "housewives' favourite", has some experience outside of TV sport, including stints on BBC One's Holiday programme and presenting on BBC Radio 2.
