Frasier became the most popular programme in the US

The NBC series, a spin-off from 1980s sitcom Cheers, was expected to come to close at the end of the current series.

Speaking on US TV this week, Grammer said he would consider another season; "I'd probably figure out some way to make that happen," said the actor, 48.

NBC may need to redress the failure of the recently cancelled comedy Coupling, which failed to draw US audiences.

But Grammer, who was appearing on The Late Show With Craig Kilborn, said he had not yet received a call.

The show, starring Grammer as a fastidious, nervous psychiatrist living with his infirm father, became the most popular show in the US in the mid-1990s.

NBC Entertainment president Jeff Zucker told the Daily Variety website "the door is still ajar" for the series' return.

It was widely reported the show's 11th season would be its last.

"I think the indications are that it's going to end after this coming season," star David Hyde Pierce, who plays Frasier's brother Niles, said earlier this year.
