Users can pay extra to jump to the front of the song queue |
Digital jukeboxes offering customers a choice of two million tracks are to be fitted in thousands of UK pubs. Music lovers will be able to select from a vast database storing almost every rock and pop song available on CD in the UK.
The system, operated by Inspired Broadcast Networks together with music distributor Entertainment UK, uses the latest broadband-enabled technology.
Customers can also buy full albums or ringtones, and receive e-mailed tracks.
Users can pay an extra 50p to move their song choice to the front of the play queue.
The machine is also the first in the industry to play pre-released tracks, and boasts 300 new tracks being added every day.
Operators say their plan will revitalise pub jukeboxes, which have been hit by consumers' instant access to rival music sources such as MTV, Napster and the iPod.
Breweries hope it will halt the decline in incomes from jukeboxes which leads to more than 1,000 being scrapped each year in the UK.
Inspired Broadcast Networks - part of the Leisure Link company - said the machines would be installed in pubs throughout the UK over the next couple of years.
