Weiland was released on $15,000 bail

He was arrested shortly after he allegedly crashed into a parked car, with police saying he then drove away.

Police said the alleged incident happened as he was out celebrating his 36th birthday.

The singer was sentenced to three years probation in August for possessing cocaine and heroin.

Mr Weiland has now been released on $15,000 (�8,800) bail and is expected to attend court on 17 November.

Los Angeles Police spokesman Jason Lee said Mr Weiland was also charged with failing to stop after hitting another car in his BMW. Damage to both cars was minimal.

Counselling

Just days before the alleged car crash, the singer was praised by a judge for staying drug-free during a routine test as part of his probation terms, but warned he faces jail if his drug habit returns.

As part of his sentence he was ordered to under go drug counselling and face random drug testing.

In 1999, he served five months in jail in connection with an arrest for heroin possession.

The break-up of the Stone Temple Pilots was largely blamed on Weiland's drug problems.

He now plays with Velvet Revolver, alongside members of Guns'n'Roses.
