The BBC says it is still "committed" to Cox's show |
The BBC has denied a newspaper report that Radio 1 breakfast show host Sara Cox faces the axe because of falling audience figures. The Daily Mail said the presenter had been warned she would be sacked if listener figures did not improve in the next 10 weeks.
A BBC spokesman said the reports were "nonsense" and the station would keep the 28-year-old presenter on the show until the end of her contract in April.
"We are fully committed to both her and the show," he said. He added the presenter also has a contract for two more years with Radio 1 on other shows.
Cox has been the breakfast show presenter for the last three years, and took over from her friend Zoe Ball.
The show, Radio 1's flagship programme, has lost 433,000 listeners in the last month.
But, according to the BBC spokesman, the show was still drawing an audience of 6.6 million.
"That represents the biggest youth-oriented radio in the country, in spite of the falling figures," he said.
Cox denied newspaper reports in January she was leaving the breakfast show.
