Pedro Almodovar began making short films in the 1970s

Entrants are invited to come up with a 15-second film on the theme of "sharing the moment", with the public deciding on a final shortlist.

The shortlisted films will then be screened at the Raindance Film Festival in London.

They will also be shown at the British Independent Film Awards, where noted movie industry figures are usually in attendance.

The eventual winner will be given the opportunity to write and direct a slightly longer film, with a budget and an experienced film crew.

The winner and two runners-up will also be put through an intensive film-making training programme.

Short film-making is often seen as a way for directors to make a name in the industry, with Oscar winners Pedro Almodovar and Stephen Daldry among those whose film careers began in short form.

The Nokia Shorts 2003 competition was founded to celebrate the advent of video technology of mobile phones.

There is no set genre for the film with animation, documentary, drama, comedy or art among the possibilities.

The organisers insist no expensive equipment is necessary, with entries accepted on MiniDV, DVcam tape or as an avi file on CD-R.
