Winslet and Mendes married in May |
Actress Kate Winslet and director Sam Mendes are expecting their first child in the new year. The couple married in May at a low-key, private ceremony in the West Indies, attended by just three friends.
It is Winslet's second marriage, following her divorce from film director Jim Threapleton two years ago after three years of marriage.
The actress already has a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Mia, from her first marriage.
The couple's spokeswoman said they were "utterly delighted" at the pregnancy.
"She (Winslet) was expecting when they got married but they didn't know at the time. The pregnancy was in its very early stages," the spokeswoman added.
The couple are on holiday in Tuscany, Italy.
The Titanic actress began a relationship with the Oscar-winning American Beauty director soon after her divorce from Threapleton.
Mendes, 37, has always maintained that he and Winslet, 27, only started seeing each other after the actress' first marriage ended.
The pair, both originally from Reading in Berkshire, first appeared together publicly at a premire for Winslet's film Iris in New York at the end of 2001.
Threapleton and Winslet split after reports in the press of arguments, while family members said the demands of the actress' career put an impossible strain on the relationship.
