Springsteen has played to more than three million people on tour

The shows, with The E Street Band, will take place on 1 and 3 October, with tickets going on sale on Monday.

Shea Stadium, the home of New York's Mets baseball team, was the site of the famous Beatles concert in 1965.

Springsteen's tour, which began in August last year, has played to more than three million people.

"The New York Mets are thrilled that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will make their final stop of their world tour at Shea Stadium," said Dave Howard, the team's business operations vice-president.

First Shea dates

"Over the last 30 years, New York has been central to Bruce's performing career," said Springsteen's manager John Landau.

Springsteen has never previously played the venue. It was last used for a concert in 1992, by Sir Elton John and Eric Clapton.

Other bands who have played at the stadium - which has a capacity of nearly 58,000 - include The Police, The Who and The Clash.

The shows will be the 118th and 119th of the tour, which has played across America as well as across Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
