Luciano Pavarotti has made a successful return to the opera stage in a Berlin performance of Tosca. The 67-year-old took the role of Cavaradossi in the one-off show at the Deutsche Oper.
The performance on Saturday "went very well and was warmly applauded", opera house spokesperson Dolly Haus said.
It was his first opera since he sang the same role at the Royal Opera House in London in January 2002.
He cancelled two Tosca performances at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in May 2002, because he was suffering from flu.
Pavarotti, who is retiring in 2005, is now due to perform three dates there in March next year.
Earlier this month he pulled out of a festival in Wales, which was meant to start a series of dates to kick off his farewell tour.
He was due to perform at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod on Saturday, the venue where he first performed in the UK in 1955.
But he withdrew from the appearance, saying he wanted to end his farewell tour at Llangollen, rather than begin it there.
