Sir Elton played to 300,000 fans in Budapest on Sunday

Sir Elton's show took place in the 6,000-steater venue, a modern building in the Kremlin complex which was originally built for political party conferences.

Tickets, costing between $20 (�12) and $1,000 (�600), sold out several weeks ago, according to Russian news agency Itar-Tass.

On Sunday, he played to an estimated 300,000 Hungarian fans in a Budapest square in one of the biggest shows of his five-month tour.

Sir Paul McCartney played a recent gig in Red Square

The Moscow gig comes exactly one month after another UK singing legend, Sir Paul McCartney, set Moscow alight with a concert in Red Square.

Sir Elton flew in by private jet on Monday and organisers told Itar-Tass: "Elton John was greatly disappointed by the weather in Moscow, which greeted him with rain."

The Kremlin Palace also has hits own ballet company as well as hosting rock gigs.

Tina Turner, Sting, Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart are among the stars who have played there in the past.
