Charles Saatchi's partner is Nigella Lawson |
Enigmatic art collector Charles Saatchi is shown spending hours hanging artworks for his London gallery in the first show in the BBC's Imagine series. Saatchi is famous for never giving interviews and is rarely seen at public events, even missing the launch party of the gallery.
But he agreed to allow the BBC arts documentary to film him hanging his collection of modern art, although he would still not be interviewed on camera.
Imagine, presented by Alan Yentob, forms part of the BBC's new arts strand, as the corporation increases its coverage of culture and the arts.
The documentary about Saatchi, which screens on Wednesday, attempts to get the inside track on the man who is credited with the Young British Artists movement that spawned the likes of Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst.
Uncomfortable
Friends and colleagues add their comments about the man and the myths surrounding him including author and broadcaster Will Self, actor Stephen Fry and artists including Emin and Jake and Dinos Chapman.
The Gallery is housed in London's County Hall |
Imagine also gives an insight into the laborious process that Saatchi goes through when hanging works for new exhibitions. It took him more than a day to hang Hirst's Spots exhibit as he wrestled to secure the perfect lighting, accompanied by partner Nigella Lawson.
But the documentary compounds the feeling that Saatchi is uncomfortable in front of cameras as he is heard to say how "irritating" it is to be filmed.
The Saatchi Gallery opened in London's County Hall in April, with more than 20,000 people visiting it in its first weekend.
Imagine: The Saatchi Phenomenon is broadcast at 2235 BST on BBC One on Wednesday.
