Disney's latest computer-animated movie Finding Nemo has topped the US box office, setting a new cartoon record. The underwater adventure, a collaboration between Disney and Pixar Studios, took $70.6m (�43.4m) in its opening week, beating the animation record of $62.5m (�8.4m) set by Monsters Inc in 2001.
Finding Nemo, which stars the voices of Albert Brooks and Ellen DeGeneres, knocked the Jim Carrey comedy Bruce Almighty off the top of the chart.
The remake of cult classic the Italian Job, which sees Mark Wahlberg replace Michael Caine in the lead role, debuted at number three, with receipts of $19.3m (�11.8m).
X-Men tie
The sci-fi sequel The Matrix Reloaded slipped to number four, with a 62% drop in takings from the previous week.
Despite a tailing off of interest, the film's total US takings have topped $232m (�142.6m)
The only other new entry in the top 10 was the low-budget comedy Wrong Turn.
Its weekly gross of $5m (�3m) matched that of X-Men 2, with the two movies tying at number six.
