Cilla Black made her name as a pop star in the 1960s

In an interview with Mark Lamarr on BBC Radio 2, the 59-year-old entertainer said she had "smoked a joint" while she was singing star in the 1960s, but had been a "good girl" when it came to harder drugs.

She said she had never tried anything stronger than cannabis.

Black made the admission after Lamarr described the decade as an "acidy, trippy" time, and saying to his guest "not that you would admit to anything like that".

Black replied: "I never did acid, I am just so high anyway. I did smoke a joint once but I did not enjoy it.

"The difference with me is that I did inhale," she added, alluding to former US president Bill Clinton's assertion that he had smoked cannabis but had not inhaled.

Black, who has announced that she is retiring from the ITV1 dating show Blind Date this year, was asked about LSD again later on in the show.

Retirement plans

She said: "Even if I did what's the problem? I just didn't. It was an unknown thing, a lot of people had very bad trips and I like to be in control. I was a good girl."

The TV presenter told Lamarr she was looking forward to her retirement plans, which include opening a club and buying a sports car.

"The nicest thing about coming of age is that I can do whatever I like. Before it was all a risk, but now I think: `What have I got to lose?'" she told the Daily Mail recently.
