Spears was to endorse a skate line |
Pop singer Britney Spears is involved in a legal battle with a footwear company over a line of roller skates. Spears filed a $1.5m breach of agreement suit against Skechers in December, claiming the firm failed to pay her adequately for marketing a line of skates and accessories.
Now the company has responded with a $10m lawsuit, accusing the singer of fraud and breach of contract.
Skechers claims Spears, who signed a three-year deal with company in January 2002, refused to co-operate with its designers and marketers in bringing out the products.
"She has not allowed Skechers to use her name and she still wants the money," the company's lawyer Daniel Petrocelli said, calling the singer's lawsuit "bogus".
"You can't have it both ways," he added.
But Britney Spears' lawyer Michaek Friedman dismissed Skechers' action as a "ludicrous attempt to distract the court and the general public from the real issue.
"Skechers failed to meet their contractural financial obligations to Ms Spears," Mr Friedman said.
Her suit claims Skechers failed to find outside businesses to make accessories for her line of skates, and used the singer's name to promote its own range of similar products.
