Doctors are examining ballet star Darcey Bussell's foot after she injured it during the premire of the Royal Ballet's The Sleeping Beauty.

The principal ballerina was replaced for the last two minutes of Saturday's performance.

The problem was "something muscular" in her foot, and that they were hopeful that she could return for her next performance on Saturday, a Royal Ballet spokesman told BBC News Online.

"She did take the curtain call, and we will find out as soon as we can exactly what is wrong," the spokesman added.

Bussell was replaced by Marianela Nunez for the final steps.

Bussell was unable to continue after her solo in the final act, Royal Ballet director Monica Mason told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

'Slightly uneasy'

She felt the pain during the first act interval but managed to carry on for two more acts, the paper said.

"Bussell had looked slightly uneasy but danced with her usual radiance," Telegraph critic Sarah Crompton said.

She is also appearing in Apollo, Raymonda and Romeo and Juleit at the Royal Opera House in London during the spring and summer.

The Sleeping Beauty is a major production for the Royal Ballet, reportedly costing more than 500,000 to stage.

It is the Royal Ballet's fourth production of Sleeping Beauty since World War II, and critics have said Natalia Makarova's traditional staging could reassert the company's reputation.
