Movie fans voted Caine's line "you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off" as their favourite.

The film, widely regarded as one of the best British movies, is a crime caper starring Caine as a bullion thief.

The line is uttered after Caine's lackeys destroy an armoured van after using too much explosive.

The runner-up in the poll was Clark Gable's line as Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind: "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn".

In third place was Richard E Grant's line: "We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here and we want them now" from the British comedy Withnail & I.

'Naughty boy'

Fourth was Robert De Niro's chilling "You talkin' to me?" in Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver.

Other films featured in the list included Apocalypse Now, When Harry Met Sally and Carry on Cleo.

Number ten on the list was "He's not the Messiah - he's a very naughty boy" from the Monty Python film The Life of Brian.

The poll was set up to mark a series of lectures at the British Library on screenwriting.

Listeners of BBC London also helped compile the list.

They also voted Andie MacDowall's line 'Was it raining? I didn't notice" from Four Weddings and a Funeral as the worst movie line.

The Italian Job is currently being remade with a US cast, led by Planet of the Apes star Mark Wahlberg.
