The singer was fourth on Fame Academy |
Ainslie Henderson, the rebel of BBC's Fame Academy, has released his debut single, Keep Me A Secret. "It reminds us that it was always Ainslie who injected life into the Academy, and whose music seemed the most distinctive and engaging," wrote BBC News Online reviewer Michael Hubbard.
We asked you what you think. Is Ainslie's offering as good as or better even than the single from Fame Academy winner David? Are you tired of reality TV pop?
This Talking Point has now closed.
I think its great - very Del Amitri. The songs cool and so is Ainslie and the video rocks.
Paul, England
He's just a 21st century equivalent of The Cure front-man Robert Smith |
Catchy pop song - shame hes such a freak in the video!
Alana, Scotland Why does Ainslie feel that he is so original? He's just a 21st century equivalent of The Cure front-man Robert Smith. At least The Cure were original.
Amanda, UK
This is definitely the best of the three Fame Academy singles, Ainslie's got an attitude about him like no-one else, he's set apart from the rest of the Academy hopefuls. I this is a great song, and if it is anything to go by I think Ainslie will be turning a lot of heads this year. I'm so excited.
Jack Jago, Hartlepool, England
If this is a taster of whats to come then Im hungry for more.
Alison Jones, Wales
Why do we even waste our time thinking about the rejects from this era of manufactured and resultantly indistinguishable pop music? Whatever happened to music that struck a note in the hearts of fans not within the current 12-14 years of age target demographic? Sorry but many real music lovers will agree that this is the real reason why music sales in the UK have been detrimentally affected over the past few quarters.
Brian J Karanja, England
If I read one more comment about wrong notes I'm going to scream! The most wonderful thing about Ainslie is that he produces a different performance every time he sings live. That means every performance is worth listening to because he gives more of himself each time. How many of the 'perfect' singers (or those who deem themselves critics) risk putting themselves out there live each time?
Maureen, Scotland
I've seen the video and I think it's actually not a bad song, but it's a real shame about the jumper.
Martin, Scotland
I much prefer Ainslie's individual style to the cheesy blandness of David |
Very talented, full of character and great fun and I, personally, think he will go far. I have to admit that if it wasn't for Ainslie I probably would not have got addicted to FA. I much prefer Ainslie's individual style to the cheesy blandness of David.
Julie Brown, UK Absolutely brilliant! Keep Me A Secret is a great pop song, so catchy I've been singing it all week. And the B-side Take Out Time is alone worth buying the single for, much more gritty and dirty rock! Ainslie is definitely THE fame academy student to watch out for in the long term.
Becks, UK
I couldn't believe he stayed in the Academy so long - he can't sing a single note in tune.
Tina, UK
No disrespect Ainslie, but next door's cat sounded better when I accidentally shut its tail in the kitchen door. Don't even get me started on the video - tell me, Ainslie, when was the last time you visited the planet Earth?
Chris James, England
It's OK I suppose, but I have to agree with Kate that the only true star to come out of the reality music shows is Darius. He's in a class of his own.
Karen, England
He rocks - he gives a whole new meaning to the reality TV shows. He just goes to prove there are still great looking lads out there that are so down to earth and so funny and can still sing! I can't wait for his album - it'll rock just as much as him!
Heather Greenfield, England
He is a great character and can do nothing but please with his off the wall true-to-self character |
Bought the Ainslie CD this morning and think it's excellent. Played it to some work friends and even though they really didn't like any of the Fame Academy business they think Ainslie's CD is a sure fire hit. There favourite seems to be Take Out Time.
Donna Newton, Essex, England I was studying at Glasgow University when Fame Academy was on, and a group of us Americans fell in love with both the show and Ainslie. He has incredible talent, both lyrically and musically. He is a great character and can do nothing but please with his off the wall true-to-self character.
Diana, USA
Ainslie is quite possibly the worst thing to come out of reality TV (and I am including Jade Goody). The song would be so-so, had it been rendered in some sort of tune, and as for Ainslie's "performing skills", I am sorry, but it has been done better by so many before him. If he wants a gimmick tell him to find his own, and stop stealing from more talented artists. Oh, and buy a T-shirt that fits, eh?!
Lisa, UK
A case of the emperor's new clothes I'm afraid. Many mistake his lack of talent or vocal skill as rawness. He is a self-pitying attention seeker and his songs are immature. It's a dull, predictable and very pretentious
Craig, Scotland
Keep Me a Secret is a catchy song and I'll probably be singing along to it for a few weeks yet. Video is average but the ending is endearing and brought a smile to my face. Take Out Time is something really special, loved it from first hearing. This should have been the A side.
Michelle Adams, England
Had no idea he was on Fame Academy. Loved the track - it reminded me of Aztec Camera, I could have swore Id heard it before I just had to go out and buy it.
Alz, UK
I have to say, I was not interested in the puppets in Popstars, and when Fame Academy came along, my faith in BBC television was restored. Not only did they come across a great idea, but they plucked the most amazing talent from obscurity. Ainslie amazed me from the very beginning.
Jaysica Marvell, England
I'm sorry but Ainslie has no voice and his stage performance doesn't show on a CD...
Jocelyne Bia, England
If all these reality TV producers got off of their behinds and went looking for new talent in clubs, pubs, local, pirate radio they might find someone with a bit of real talent |
Ainslie is dreamy. I hope his single is released in the States...
Betty, USA What a load of rubbish! That's all we need, yet another TV-made pop star trying to put the world to rights with their non-distinguishable droning 'ooh look at me!' drivel. If all these reality TV producers got off of their behinds and went looking for new talent in clubs, pubs, local, pirate radio they might find someone with a bit of real talent.
Chris Bowles, England
I think he should stick to Ready Steady Cook
Alastair, London, UK
Ainslie was a total embarrassment on FA, his antics did him no favours and his inability to hold a note was diabolical, something akin to this awful release.
Expatscot, Belgium
Giving in to mediocrity ISN'T being successful. And giving in to commercialism is just cheating and goes against all musical morals. Damn you.
Egg, Essex, UK
I think the number of female contributors to this forum is rather telling - gives the game away as to his target audience. To put it another way, all style and no substance marks Mr Henderson's first attempt at popular beat stardom.
Johnster, Scotland
I loved Keep Me A Secret when Ainslie sang it on Fame Academy. However, now I've bought the CD, I've discovered that the B side - Take Out Time (co-written with 2 ex-James members, and there are great hints of the old James sound there) is even better.
Nina, UK
Like everything that these reality TV shows have churned out so far, the lyrics are appallingly bad and the tune's are unmemorable. Ainslie sounds like Morrissey after 18 pints and looks like a cross between Fran Healy and Dame Judi Dench. Not for the faint hearted !
Tommy Horne, Scotland
I'm sure Ainslie has better songs in him than that. I ask the question if he had any choice in releasing that track or if he was contractually obliged to. Let's see what he can really do.
Pete, England
I really like it, its much better than the other two songs, but do wonder if this will be a one hit wonder, only time will tell.
Tracy Walker, England
Nothing, but manufactured drivel designed to make the fat cats of the record industry richer.
Mark Grant, Hamilton, Scotland
A real breath of fresh air from reality TV music shows |
Ainslie was the best thing to come out of Fame Academy along with Sinead. Their music is fresh and new, not manufactured like most of today's music.
Audrey Gunn, Scotland I think Ainslie has no need to worry - he will remain a secret. I thought he was dreadful on Fame Academy and whilst he may 'have a career' I am not certain that singing is his particular vocation.
Nick, Scotland
The song is lyrically flawed and Ainslie's voice is as tuneful as a fire in a pet shop. The video's pretty rancid as well. Next!
Justin, London, UK
He is too much like a young guy jumping around in front of his bedroom mirror. But wish him all the best!
John McCaul, N Ireland
Great chorus but spare the self-indulgent indie schmindie posturing in the god awful video - if he concentrates on writing good songs and tones down the Michael Stipe 'look at me I'm a bit weird' schtick he could go on to be as big as 3SL - go for it Ainsley!
Richard Watson, UK
Nothing special, saw the video and heard the song for the first time yesterday and I couldn't even begin to tell you how it went because it was nothing special like all the songs being churned out by these reality show contestants! The only one who deserves credit for being a good singer etc is Darius - he's got something special.
Kate, England
I love Keep Me a Secret. Ainslie was my favourite Fame Academy student. He always stood out from the rest. He may not have the best voice in the world but he more than makes up for it with his personality, looks, charisma and sense of fun and humour.
Den, England
He hits too many wrong notes for my liking |
I loved this song and the video was very cool too... especially at the end bit where he hides away! Cool song...better than David and Sinead.
Seema, London, England
Why isn't Ainslie's song on the Radio One 'A' list. and Sinead wasn't on the 'A' list either. I would have though the BBC would want to support FA students. I love Ainslie's single, very good, and hopefully a sign of some good stuff from him.
Mike Warren, UK
A fantastic single! I like David's, but this has a lot more life in it. It's very catchy and I hope that it gets to number one. He's very unique and a true star
Ailish, England
Ainslie is the one person my boyfriend and I agreed on and who we were rooting for! He has gutsy vocals, is slightly nuts and has a real star quality - as his impromptu stage dive on a Fame Academy showdown proved!
Flash Wilson, UK
Ainslie is fantastic! A real breath of fresh air from reality TV music shows. Keep Me A Secret is a fantastic and catchy self-penned tune, and Take Out Time is a brilliant b-side. Ainslie deserves a lot of success for this debut offering and should be able to prove all those stereotypes wrong within weeks.
Emma, UK
He hits too many wrong notes for my liking - he didn't win for a reason.
Stacey, UK
Ainslie is a star and during his time at Fame Academy it was obvious he was a talent. I think he is better than Sneddon because he's jut so unique and he has his own style whereas David is a bit samey.
Lucy , England
Ainslie has a unique style, he has a lot of passion which comes out in his music. He isn't the best singer in the world but he has a charisma about him that has you glued to watching him. The fact he is gorgeous is also an added bonus.
Elaine Skinner, Scotland
Great to see Ainslie release this single. As a huge James fan it is a very welcome return of Saul and Mark of James to the fold with their co-written B Side Take Out Time. You know that James currently lack a lead singer since Tim Booth departed...
Ian Pette, UK
Keep me a Secret is a really catchy, happy song, but I think Take Out time is brilliant. Much better than David's Sneddon's single, in my opinion.
Alyson, UK
Ainslie is very unlike anything or anyone to come out of a reality TV show. He is quirky, different and a complete individual.
Emma, Germany (but moved from England 3 years ago)
Ainslie is brilliant, all of the Fame Academy students are very talented and unique. I prefer this song to David's.
Melissa , UK
Ainslie who???
Annette Hartley, UK
The B-side will surprise many people. Take Out Time is perhaps even better than Keep Me A Secret - a big guitar sound with an oh-so-catchy chorus. Criticisms of Ainslie's singing ability are blown away with this track as his exuberant and distinctive voice comes to the fore. Dave Prince, England, UK
Just bought the single now and I am seriously blown away
Alix, Wales
Keep Me a Secret is a great track and I for one have already got my copy. My local radio station are playing it on its on merit.
Cassie Waters, England
Ainslie has amazing talent. He was always my favourite Fame Academy student as he was very unique and had his own style.
Phoebe Cooper, England
