| Friday, 14 February, 2003, 12:26 GMT R Kelly defies legal worries ![]() R Kelly (right) has denied the charges R&B singer R Kelly career is continuing to flourish in the US, despite his arrest on child pornography charges. The Grammy-winning artist wrote the track Bump, Bump, Bump, which features P Diddy, for the teen boy band B2K, which recently hit number one on the Billboard chart. Kelly is currently up for another Grammy, releases his CD Chocolate Factory on Tuesday and has now scored his own hit with the video for Ignition, which is the most requested track on Black Entertainment Television.
"He is probably more popular now than during I Believe I can Fly in 1996," said Kedar Massenburg, president of Motown Records. Kelly was arrested and charged with 21 counts of child pornography in June last year. He was arrested again in January on charges of possessing child pornography. Kelly, 36, has maintained his innocence throughout. No trial date has yet been set but the singer faces a maximum of 15 years behind bars if found guilty. The scandal initially appeared to derail his career.
A joint album with rapper Jay-Z suffered from modest sales and his single I Need A Hug failed to get widespread airplay, but Kelly's career now seems to be on the upturn. "R&B radio has clearly decided to rally around him," said Sean Ross, editor in chief of the trade publication Airplay Monitor. Kelly, whose first name is Robert, has been a prolific hit-maker for more than a decade. His last album TP-2.com sold 3.5 million copies in the US, a million more than his previous one. And Epic Records had no problem with B2K recording his song, which Kelly also produced. "He sent us some music for the guys and that record really stood out," said Max Grousse, a vice president at Epic. "We definitely did weigh it (the scandal), but as you can see with it being the number one record, it was undeniable. A hit record is a hit record." | See also: 23 Jan 03 | Entertainment 06 Jun 02 | Entertainment 27 Jun 02 | Entertainment Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
