It will take the form of a domed tomb featuring granite walkways, multicoloured marble and a bronze sculpture of the legendary 1960s guitarist. Hendrix's family says the memorial will open in April to accommodate the thousands of fans who pay homage to him each year. Hendrix died in London in 1970 aged 27 after a short-lived but influential career which helped to change the face of rock music.
The memorial is situated at the Greenwood Memorial Park and Cemetery in Seattle. The singer's previous grave site was often left muddy from rain and littered with beer cans discarded by fans paying homage to their hero. Hendrix was born near to the site in Renton, 10 miles south of Seattle. Janie Hendrix, Jimi's half-sister, said: "There were thousands of people visiting each year, but it was muddy and wasn't conducive to the fans playing homage. "Our father wanted it done before he passed away last year." Permanent memorial In November, Seattle citizens marked what would have been Hendrix's 60th birthday with a series of events including live concerts. The memorial is expected to appease many critics who have bemoaned the lack of any permanent memorial to Seattle's most famous son. There are no street names or public buildings named after him, nor any prominent statues. Hendrix became the first major black rock artist to lead a band with white backing members. Many music fans regard him as the finest rock guitarist of all time. | See also: 27 Nov 02 | Entertainment 28 Oct 02 | Entertainment 24 Sep 02 | Entertainment 07 Aug 02 | Entertainment 05 Jul 02 | Entertainment 21 Jun 01 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
