The US series, which returns to BBC Two and BBC Three on Sunday, is praised by a panel of critics, producers and channel controllers for being "truly groundbreaking". The first series starred Keifer Sutherland as a counter-terrorist agent who had to deal with an assassination plot on a presidential candidate as well as the kidnapping of his daughter and wife. Each episode covered one hour out of 24 as Sutherland's character battled against each crisis.
The other US series featured in the list include 1980s cop drama Hill Street Blues, which was one of Channel 4's earliest imports. "Its influence is still felt in the upmarket, intelligent series the station continues to import from the USA," the magazine added. The Simpsons - currently shown on Sky and the BBC - is also praised for "comprehensively filleting every family value". British dramas include one of BBC Two's first shows, costume drama The Forsyte Saga, police series Z Cars, the BBC's long-running Play For Today strand and children's drama Grange Hill. BBC drama controller Mal Young endorsed ITV rival Coronation Street's place on the list, saying: "It changed everything." He added: "If they'd said back then, could you come up with a soap that will run for 45 years and top the ratings... there would have been focus groups, market research, the lot. And it would have been crap." Groundbreaking comedy included the BBC's Monty Python Flying Circus and Dad's Army, while ITV's This Morning is credited with revolutionising daytime TV. Sports strand Grandstand, reality pioneer Big Brother and Michael Parkinson's chat show also featured. The full list:
