| Tuesday, 21 January, 2003, 15:54 GMT South Bank awards honour the arts ![]() James Nesbitt was in the award-winning Bloody Sunday Singer Ms Dynamite has been named among the winners of this year's South Bank Show awards, handed out by the ITV1 arts programme.
Ms Dynamite was chosen over Coldplay and David Bowie to win the best pop title. The pregnant star's trophy cabinet is already bulging after winning the Mercury Music Prize and three Mobo awards. Oscar-winning stage and screen director Sam Mendes was honoured for his contribution to theatre for his parting productions at London's Donmar Warehouse, Uncle Vanya and Twelfth Night.
The prize for best comedy was won by BBC Two's The League of Gentlemen, which beat last year's winner The Office. Writer Sir Tom Stoppard was awarded an outstanding contribution to arts prize, chosen by a jury headed by South Bank Show presenter Melvyn Bragg. Sir Tom won an Oscar for his work on Shakespeare in Love, and is one of Britain's most respected playwrights. Writer and director Paul Greengrass' controversial ITV1 film Bloody Sunday - which starred James Nesbitt as a civil rights leader - won the best TV drama category.
Sculptor Anish Kapoor's huge indoor sculpture, Marsyas, in the Turbine Hall in London's Tate Modern won the visual arts awards. Tipping the Velvet author Sarah Waters latest novel, Fingersmith, missed out on the Booker Prize but was awarded the literature award by the South Bank Show judges.
