The first US version of Pop Idol was a huge hit in the States, with 22.8 million viewers tuning in to see Texas cocktail waitress Kelly Clarkson beat former salesman Justin Guarini in the final last year.

The second series has already caused controversy with accusations of age discrimination from a 50-year-old who claims he was told he was too old to compete when he turned up for one of the auditions.

Yes, I am more enthusiastic this time. Last year, I was hardly aware of the show, and by the time I was tuned in to it, it was past mid-way. So, I waited for the show to return this year, and I plan to watch every episode. It is fun to watch so much talent.

Also, I think Simon really does a good job as a judge. It is entertaining!!

As a Brit having watched the first Pop Idol in the UK, American Idol is so much better. The brilliant performers are better than those in the UK, and the awful ones are SO BAD. Americans seem to have more self confidence than the Brits, even though it is not always warrented. This results in excellent viewing when the judges review their dire performances. Although the judges can be harsh, all the candidates know what to expect and the programme lacks the perversity and cruelty of other shows such as Joe Millionaire.
