| Tuesday, 21 January, 2003, 08:39 GMT Edited Ross arrest tape released ![]() Ross' voice has been edited out of the tape Police have released a heavily-edited version of the videotape of Diana Ross being arrested for drink-driving in Tucson, Arizona. The singer's lawyers had tried to block its release but eventually agreed to it being made public if Ross' voice was taken off. The grainy black and white video was recorded by a dashboard camera in a police car on the evening Ross was arrested in December. Ross, 58, has entered a not guilty plea to three charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
A breath test showed she had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit in Arizona. The tape begins roughly 50 minutes after Ross was stopped by police and does not show the sobriety or breath tests she took. But officers can be heard telling the superstar that they would try and keep her arrest out of the media. "We're not going to call anybody up to tell them anything," one officer said. "If somebody found out and called the department and said 'I want the information,' it's not something we can necessarily withhold - although we would try to - but because the way the state law is, we have to give stuff out," he said. Rehab Ross' statements were all edited out of the video after lawyers successfully argued her privacy would be violated. Police allege Ross was twice over the drink-drive limit when she was stopped in the early hours of 30 December and that she failed a sobriety test. She is due to appear in court on 31 January. Last year Ross checked into a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre in California before the start of a summer tour. She first found fame with the Supremes after neighbour Smokey Robinson arranged a contact with the legendary Motown label. The group scored hits with Where Did Our Love Go?, Stop in the Name of Love and My World Is Empty Without You before Ross found renewed fame as a solo artist in the 1970s. Hits like Ain't No Mountain High Enough were followed by a 1980s revival with Chain Reaction. |
