The five Oscars won by the 1975 classic One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest are among more than 100 statuettes in an exhibition at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills.

Like all exhibitions at the academy, And The Oscar Went To... is free and open to the public.

The academy's fourth floor gallery is the temporary home for the statuettes, most of which are being borrowed from the winners or their heirs.

Every year that the Academy Awards have been presented is represented by at least one winners' statuette.

The academy is displaying 10 of the 15 of the statuettes distributed to winners in the very first year of the Oscars.

These include the Oscar presented to Emil Jannings, the first recipient of an Academy Award of Merit in 1929.

The Oscar won by Katharine Hepburn for her role in Morning Glory in 1993 is also featured, alongside the statuettes scooped by Karl Malden for his performance in A Streetcar Named Desire (1959) and John Wayne for his role in True Grit (1969).

Production design sketches and photographs will be displayed

Other notable Oscars featured are those won by John Williams for the music score from Star Wars (1977), Cuba Gooding Jr, for his performance in Jerry Maguire (1996) and Francis Ford Coppola for writing the screenplay for The Godfather (1972).

Among the other unique items on display are a plaster statuette that was awarded during the metal shortage during World War II and Judy Garland's miniature Oscar, presented in 1939 for her performance as a screen juvenile that year.

The academy's Grand Lobby Gallery showcases artefacts and items relating to Oscar history as part of the exhibition.

On display are production design sketches and photographs of the award ceremony.

And The Oscar Went To... continues at the Academy until 17 April 2003.
