Wes Butters, a 23-year-old DJ chosen after a nationwide search, is to replace Mark Goodier as the host of BBC Radio 1's chart rundown on Sundays.

The DJ, who has previously worked for stations in the north west and at Galaxy 105 in Newcastle, will take over the post in February.

He will have to compete with Goodier, who is to host the UK's first interactive music chart show on digital and local radio.

Goodier recently presented his last BBC chart show and is leaving the BBC after 15 years with the corporation.

The slot is currently being filled by guest presenters, who have included Chris Moyles, Emma B and Jo Whiley.

Butters, from Salford, Greater Manchester, described the programme, which reveals which singles are topping the charts, as a "huge deal", and said: "Coming to work at Radio 1 is the big gig and I can't wait to get started.

"It's going to be amazing being the person counting down the chart and revealing to the nation what the Official UK Number 1 is each week."

The BBC has also just signed a deal with the Official UK Charts Company to exclusively broadcast the chart on air and online for another three years.

This means the charts can also be seen on BBC One's Top Of The Pops and Simon Mayo's show on BBC Radio 2.

Goodier will present his debut programme on the new Smash Hits Chart Show on 5 January, from 4pm to 7pm - the same time as the Radio 1 chart show.

The chart will be compiled not just from sales, but also from listeners' votes, airplay data and requests from viewers of the Smash Hits and The Box music channels.

It follows a move by Emap Radio, owners of the Smash Hits station, to drop the official chart from its stations.

As well as being heard on digital radio, the interactive chart can be found on other stations in the UK including London's Kiss 100, Key 103 in Manchester, Radio Aire in Leeds and Radio City in Liverpool.
