| Friday, 20 December, 2002, 11:18 GMT BBC7 launch: Your views ![]() Merton is a familiar voice on BBC radio Paul Merton was the host of a two-hour comedy special which officially launched BBC7, the corporation's new digital radio station. The special featured a selection of some of the station's highlights. It included a reading of Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland, and excerpts from The Goon Show. BBC7, the corporation's fifth and final digital radio station, features comedy, drama and children's programmes. A selection of your reviews are below. At last radio comedy is getting the recognition it deserves. The long clips broadcast last night were a great sample of what it's capable of. Now where can I find an accurate schedule??? I spent a happy 90 minutes listening to radio 7 today. Some star drama on the first day - I listen via www in the office and freeview in the evening. Nice to see excellent content getting another airing. I was really looking forward to the launch, and bought a DAB set specifically for BBC7 (I have hundreds of the BBC Radio Collection series), but I feel I have been cheated. Why? Because I have since found out that BBC7 is broadcast in MONO on DAB with a low bitrate. Fine for Hancock et al, but for the wonderful Marple/Poirot dramatisations? Such a wasted opportunity. I am hoping that the schedule will settle down quickly and that the eclectic mix of comedy, classics and children's programming will evolve into a more adult offering. I had thought from the early advertising that BBC 7 was designed for people with a sense of fun and well developed humour gland. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the programming, seeing that the drama and comedy advertised so far is so accessible, though do wish there was a more adequate listing for the station. Long live King St. Junior! Good idea with lots of potential but will there also be a "Listen Again" feature available in the future like Radio 4? It would be great to dip into drama such as the Sherlock Holmes stories which are only broadcast in the morning. Best wishes for this new venture. I listened to it via the web. Its great to hear some good OL British comedy again. Thanks BBC. Radio 7 is a great idea! For those of us listening abroad via the internet - it is like a life-line. The opening was good - and I can see it is just going to get better. Can't wait for the Navy Lark and Round the Horne!!And the books and drama - brilliant! - I think you're doing just as good a job as the British Council in bringing language/culture to the world! I like the idea of BBC7, particularly if you are going to respond to listeners' requests for what goes on it. The Archers from the very beginning would be excellent. How about it? Great potential if it is 'programmed' correctly and thoughtfully. A single listings page would be good too. A marvellous idea, but why don't you bring it to radio not digital radio? I think the radio is superb. It is informative and also very clear. Rating 11/11 :) A really good radio station. All you need to do now is to transfer all the sport, weather and news from the other BBC stations to their own stations. Didn't think too much of the opening night. I hope there is going to be some original programming too. I'm not sure how much of a daily diet of "Take It From Here", "Educating Archie" and "Mrs Dale's Diary" I could take. Some vintage Archers might be nice though. Such a shame that the 7am to 8am slot is filled with children's shows. I'd like to go to work with a smile. Great that there is another BBC station, but so far there hasn't been much variety. All that I've heard so far has been a rehash of Radio 4. I do hope the BBC will commit to some new shows, but it's difficult to see where the money is going to come from. I thought BBC 7 would be a good idea, and thought the launch show was brilliant. I can't wait to hear what 's coming next
Matt, United Kingdom Tremendous! I was looking forward to hearing some of Paul Merton's usual wit over the internet, but as the launch show immediately switched into 'Alice in Wonderland' it seemed like the BBC was still stuck in the WWII era rather than the WWW era. I soon switched off. Splendid! A decent sample. Now all I need is a digital radio. More rubbish I get to pay for despite having no intention of ever using. BBC 7 is a great idea. I do wish the Govt. would leave the BBC alone - they are doing a great job all round. The problem, though, with the Sky/Freeview platforms is that there are no radio programme listings. A single, printable, page, on the Net, with all BBC 7 programmes for 7 days ahead would be very useful. A few months ago, I said to my friends what a good idea it would be to have a sort of UK-Gold version of BBC Radio 4 and lo and behold, you do it with BBC Radio 7. Can't wait for the old comedies like Round the Horne, the navy lark and Alan Partridge. Good Luck! BBC 7 showed a lot of potential. The Launch Show was good, except for the fact that the shows where not played in full !!! I was also very upset that BBC 4 finished just as I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue began to get really good. I hope it remains as good as last night so I want to listen to it on the TV... I love radio comedy and the spoken word, but frankly a lot of this stuff is over done. How many times can you listen to the Goons? and in any case, they are not funny to anyone under 55 - I listened and just did not smile. More success will come from drama and book narrative. But really this should be on FM, and replace one of the hundreds of clone rap/pop/garage/garden shed/acid/vinegar music channels. Like the idea, but all these new stations are squeezing themselves into the BBC's bandwidth at the expense of sound quality. So-called CD-quality Digital Audio Radio now has worse sound quality than FM. Bear that in mind if you want to buy one. I thought the BBC was always strapped for cash? How about you get rid of these excess digital channels and reduce the licence fee, instead. Some fantastic strands. Great comedy and drama. It is a shame that drive time is for kids only! Wonderful! At last something worth listening to but why oh why in mono on dab? Is not DAB supposed to be the future of high quality radio reception? I agree with Jamie and others who have written in about BBC7 on DAB. I also bought DAB specifically because of the promise of BBC7 and it is everything we could have hoped for but for two specific things. 1. The station is mono on DAB 2. There are - so far - no classic full-length (i.e. 90-minute) dramas, for which R4 was once known. The fact that the station is mono on DAB is a grave mistake which takes the BBC back almost 30 years (stereo was introduced to R4 in 1973). I would be happy to see World Service taken off DAB if it meant that BBC7 could be in stereo. Thanks for launching a wonderful radio station. I only wish you didn't stop broadcasting at night because that means its not on when I'm at home in the evening. Why not just repeat the evening hours again? Or at least add a "Listen Again" feature like Radio 4. Great to hear Hancock, I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, Dad's Army, Steptoe etc etc. More biographies please! Any chance of broadening the Doctor Who library with the Big Finish CD stories??? They really deserve a wider audience! Radio7 is great and another reason I'm glad to have bought a DAB (in addition to 6 Music) but I wonder how long it'll be before all the BAD comedy from Radio4 starts appearing. There's some truly awful stuff, in addition to all the wonderful shows like League, ISIHAC, and Alan Partridge. I really love it, I wish I could listen all day. I feel like I'm going to get a chance to catch up on all the stuff I've missed watching the idiot box. Top marks to The Mighty Boosh! How long before it's a TV series? Oh dear I think I just contradicted myself. Realy like the new station, I am sad I cannot hear it on the car radio as the childrens' programmes would be a realy good way of keeping the children quite. Would love this to be a mainstream channel I thoroughly enjoyed hearing the launch on Radio 4, and the next day I tried without success to buy a digital radio. No one had one, except one shop in Tottenham Ct Rd which had a pocket size in unknown make. He said the other makes were withdrawn because there had been problems with them. John Lewis had marked their only model 'not available'.Please advise. I don't own a TV. | See also: 12 Nov 02 | Entertainment 29 Oct 02 | Entertainment 11 Oct 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
