Singers Simon and Garfunkel, Johnny Mathis and Etta James are to be given lifetime achievement Grammys.

Performers to be honoured posthumously at the 45th Grammys on 23 February include big-band leader Glenn Miller and Latin jazz performer Tito Puente.

Folk music archivist Alan Lomax and the New York Philharmonic will receive Trustees Awards.

Export ban on art treasure

The UK government has banned the export of a landscape sketch by the Flemish master Van Dyck in an effort to keep it in the country.

The oil-on-canvas work lies on the reverse of a drawing of a stallion. Until recently it lay hidden beneath a lining canvas.

The artwork, valued at �830,000, was bought at auction at Christie's two years ago and the owner now wants to take it out of the UK.

Announcing plans to ban its export until at least 29 January, arts minister Baroness Blackstone said it lent "valuable insight" into Van Dyck's technique.

Chirac mourns late star

French President Jacques Chirac has paid tribute to actor Daniel Gelin, who has died at the age of 81.

The actor, best known to English audiences for his part in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much, died in a Paris hospital on Friday, reportedly from kidney failure.

He had a 60-year career in French radio, TV and film, working with leading film-makers such as Claude Chabrol and Jean Cocteau.

Mr Chirac called Gelin "one of France's most endearing actors" and said he would be remembered for his "subtlety and sensitivity in his roles."

Judge cuts Diddy fine

A US judge has reduced a fine against Sean "P Diddy" Combs from �2m to �450,000 (�300,000).

Judge William Z Wood of Forsyth Superior Court, Georgia, said Combs must pay damages to Cedrick Bobby Lemon, who sued Combs after the star allegedly ordered bodyguards to beat him up at a concert in 1995.

The judge had previously ordered Combs to pay $2.4m (�1.6m) because he had not answered Lemon's claim within a given time period.

Combs' lawyers are seeking to have the remaining judgement dismissed.
