| Friday, 1 November, 2002, 11:46 GMT Robinson is next Deayton stand-in ![]() Anne Robinson was a guest on the show in 1992 TV presenter Anne Robinson is to stand in next week as host for BBC satirical quiz Have I Got News For You? following the sacking of Angus Deayton. Robinson's one-week tenure follows show regular Paul Merton stepping in to the host's seat, after 12-year host Angus Deayton was dropped by the BBC in the wake of tabloid revelations about his personal life. Deayton's departure is the first permanent line-up change in the show's history. It will not be the first time Robinson has appeared on the show - in 1992 she was a guest on Paul Merton's team.
Robinson took the show to the US - but after a strong start the quiz bombed in the ratings and was cancelled this year. She also sparked debate with an appearance on the comedy show Room 101 where she nominated the Welsh to be sent into oblivion. Welsh MPs dubbed her as "racist", but she later promoted the Wales Tourist Board (WTB)free of charge and appeared in a t-shirt emblazoned with the message "Wales Open for Easter". Successor The search for a permanent replacement for the show - which is only three episodes into its latest season - continues. BBC political correspondent Andrew Marr, Newsnight host Jeremy Paxman and former ITV political editor John Sergeant have all been tipped to succeed Deayton, but nothing has been confirmed. Viewers get their first chance to see how the show may fare without its long-running host on Friday. Audience members at the show's taping on Thursday said Paul Merton was nervous at first, but ended up giving a brilliant performance. | See also: 30 Oct 02 | Entertainment 30 Oct 02 | Entertainment 31 Oct 02 | Talking Point 14 Oct 02 | Entertainment Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
