| Tuesday, 1 October, 2002, 13:44 GMT 14:44 UK Barrymore attacked for 'empty words' ![]() Mr Barrymore was on GMTV on Monday The father of the man who died in Michael Barrymore's swimming pool has dismissed the entertainer's sympathy as "empty words". Mr Barrymore went on national television on Monday to say he was "sad and sorry" and that he understood how the parents of Stuart Lubbock were feeling. But Terry Lubbock went on the same show on Tuesday to reject the sentiments and say that he was not satisfied with Mr Barrymore's answers.
An open verdict was recorded on the death at an inquest in September. Terry Lubbock told GMTV that Mr Barrymore could not understand how he was feeling. "He's a person, he's a man, but he's not a father. How can he equate to my position?" But his family may meet Mr Barrymore to clear up the unanswered questions, Mr Lubbock said.
"It's not down to me. It really isn't down to me, but personally, maybe yes." On Monday, Mr Barrymore said he would be delighted to meet the Lubbocks "so we can sit down and talk about it". He also denied any part in the death of their son. "You can call me a lousy entertainer, but you can't call me a killer," he said.
"How many drugs were at the party? Who took what, and who forced drugs on other people? Maybe they did, maybe they didn't," Terry Lubbock said. The injuries, which were "a hell of a mystery" also had to be explained, he added. "Mr Barrymore left the party before the police arrived, why did he do that? What did he have under his arm?
"These things have got to be explained, they really have." Police are currently investigating claims Mr Barrymore lied during the inquest. He denied being able to swim and denied witness claims he rubbed cocaine into Mr Lubbock's gums at the house party. Subsequently his ex-wife, Cheryl Barrymore, claimed he could swim and she alleged she had regularly seen him administer drugs to others. A post-mortem examination revealed high levels of alcohol and drugs in Mr Lubbock's system and injuries which may have been caused by a serious sexual assault. Mr Barrymore is now on holiday in Mauritius. | See also: 30 Sep 02 | Entertainment 30 Sep 02 | Entertainment 29 Sep 02 | Entertainment 22 Sep 02 | Entertainment 16 Sep 02 | England 16 Sep 02 | UK Top Entertainment stories now: Links to more Entertainment stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
