Singing sensation Ms Dynamite has cemented her new star status by dominating this year's Music of Black Origin (Mobo) Awards.

The 21-year-old UK garage singer won three prizes, including UK act of the year and best newcomer, at Tuesday's ceremony.

Another new star, US singer Ashanti, won two awards.

A host of stars - from DJ Tony Blackburn to garage bad boys So Solid Crew - turned out for the London ceremony, which honours "all types of music from urban culture".

Ms Dynamite's trio of gongs was completed by the best single award for her top 10 hit It Takes More.

Her hat-trick comes just two weeks after her debut album, A Little Deeper, won the Mercury Music Prize for album of the year.

But the best album award was one prize she missed out on at the Mobos, with that accolade going to another new star, United States soul singer Alicia Keys.

More US winners came in the form of Ashanti for best R&B and Ja Rule featuring Ashanti for best hip-hop.

The late R&B star Aaliyah, who died in August 2001, was named winner of the best video award.

One of the highlights of the ceremony, at London Arena, was an exclusive performance by Craig David of his new single, What's Your Flava?

Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff appeared on stage with former Eurythmics musician Dave Stewart, while more performances came from Sugababes and Chaka Khan.

Chaka Khan - best-known for her hits I Feel For You and Ain't Nobody - was also rewarded with a lifetime achievement award.

An outstanding achievement award was given to former TLC singer Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who was killed in a car crash in April.

The ceremony was hosted by US rapper LL Cool J and Alesha Dixon, one member of UK garage girl group Mis-Teeq.

The awards attracted controversy when a small group of campaigners gathered outside the venue to protest against the nominations for acts they said were homophobic.

The OutRage! group, led by Peter Tatchell, held a noisy protest at the inclusion of acts Elephant Man, TOK and Capleton on the shortlist for the best reggae award.

But the prize eventually went to Sean Paul.
